Montessori Resources

Montessori and Brain Research
"The basis of the reform of education and society, which is a necessity of our times, must be built upon . . . scientific study." -- Maria Montessori

Current brain research supports that before children learn new skills, they must have time for practice and mastery. The research supports that the development of a child's capacity to learn is crucial during the first six years of life. These ideas are essential elements of the Montessori approach, and classroom research has validated these studies.

  • Association Montessori Internationale conducated a study comparing outcomes of children at a public inner-city Montessori school with children who attended traditional schools indicates that Montessori education leads to children with better social and academic skills. The study appears in the Sept. 29, 2006 issue of the journal Science. Click on the Research tab to access the full report and other publications.
  • Montessori Education and Brain Development provides a short overview of the connections between new technological advances in brain research and the Montessori approach.
